My chicks don’t seem to be getting bullied at all. They definitely seem like they like the coop more then the brooder where the cats stared at them at all. Cindy the little kitty decided to lay outside in the sun then cuddle with me.
So…. Those chicks I hatched are now outside with the big chickens. They seem to be doing well so far. The goat on the other side was eating the chickens feathers. So that wasn’t very nice of her.
I love my first batch of quail so much. They are so friendly and nice. I can pet them and they like to look at you. Then Cindy’s outside and enjoying that, lots of new animals she’s meeting for the first time.
My little kittens are growing up so nicely. Currently they are the most cuddly cats. I just finally am letting them go outside so they can experience it before it gets to cold. Then next spring the goal is to get some cows and that’s where I’m wanting to keep them. All I need now is a fence :)
Rue and tuck both got through there first round of training. Definitely a huge difference from day one to our last day. I’m really excited to see how far they come after they are all done with the courses.
The broody hens chicks are growing up more and more each day. They are pretty cool and have amazing personalities. They don’t get bullied at all by the other chickens so that is a good thing. Then there’s possum the cat. He has the best personality too. He’s good with cats, dogs, goats, chickens. He is probably the only cat I see regularly with the goats and chickens. He’s very friendly and meows at you when your outside and he wants you to look at him. His name came from his face, when I got him he kinda looked more like a possum then a cat….
Still getting odd sized eggs. Got an extremely small egg compared to the normal quail egg. I kinda wanna hard boil it, I think it would be super cute. My polish chickens are also getting a lot bigger and I think they may start laying soon. I have one rooster that is polish and he’s just starting to learn how to crow.
Added some new perches to the goat side of the extended chicken coop and they seem to like it. The roosts on the other side of the coop have been full so the other roosts were much needed.
My cats are all doing great. My kittens are getting bigger. I don’t know how people live without cats. I really enjoy cat cuddles and always being able to see a cat at all times.
I absolutely love having chickens, they are so entertaining. I have 5 hens start laying their first eggs consistently now. I also have been loving this weather. Four wheeler rides have been my favorite pass time.
Worked on expanding my indoor chicken area to where now the goats can come in. There’s an opening in the fence where the chickens can go to either side, not fully connected so the goats don’t eat the chickens feed. Then the broody hens chicks are getting bigger. Starting to really get those tail feathers.
Sooo I captured a picture with all my favorite birds… these are definitely the ones I love the most. Both my roosters and my ducks. I EXPANDED my chicken area inside and made it where the goats can come in and the ducks can now get outside!! THIS WAS THEIR FIRST DAY OUTSIDE! It made me so happy. It made me sad they never went out the chicken door. It also always seems like it’s a beautiful day here in the summer time.
So for the past few morning since I’ve put this box on the ground every morning when I come in he’s in it. Which is so odd, because he doesn’t sleep there I always see him on the roosts when it’s actually dark out. I’m not exactly sure why he does this….. Officially both of my pekin ducks are boys. The curl in the tail feathers is one key feature male ducks have. My Cayuga ducks don’t have them yet, even though they are a few weeks older, they are smaller in size too. I am excited to see their curl when it comes, because I know I have boys lol.
So I’ve told a few of you that I’ve been working on my well house, it’s coming along nicely. Its where my quail will be in the winter, and thinking of making a little hang out in there as well. The box you can see that’s ugly is where the well and pump is, so I’m going to be redoing that box as well shortly. Just trying to come up with a creative idea for it.. The boy goats are loving there extra space, and are getting bigger everyday it seems. Ned was bigger then homer and now homer is bigger then Ned so that’s new too.
I’ve got a new hen laying, I have one white egg layer. Ever since she started laying I’ve gotten an egg from her daily. Over the weekend I was working on getting my quail sexed, organized, and harvesting the extra boys. Currently have 14 on each level. 6 girls to 1 boy ratio on each level, which is the perfect ratio for keeping happy quail.
I have 12 chicks as of this morning. Both incubators are about even for how many have hatched. I totally forgot how huge chicken chicks are compared to quail. The one thing I don’t like about chickens is how long they take to grow. My garden is pretty small this year so I haven’t gotten to much but it’s always fun to pick what’s growing. I have so many tomatoes they aren’t ripe yet though. I have quite a few pumpkins too so that’s exciting. Next year I definitely want to upgrade my garden.
Today the eggs started hatching!! Almost all look like they are starting to hatch in my white incubator, but I see no signs in my blue one :/ The white did have the most recently laid eggs and the blue one had eggs laid roughly between 1-4 week prior to when I starting incubating them. I’m still hoping for the best though!
So this morning one of the baby chicks had gotten out, I went to go catch it and the rooster attacked me. I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t even look at him or even think about him and I was just going to go get the chick and my leg got hurt out of no where and I looked and he was all puffed up at me. Couldn’t believe him, but I do feel super sad for him because he had a limp this morning, so maybe because he’s hurt he’s a little more aggressive. I’m not sure how he got a limp, but I hope he gets better soon. He’s still my favorite even if he’s the meanest to me out of all the chickens. My cat is still just chilling on the incubator all the time. These golden comet chicken eggs should be hatching hopefully this weekend! I’m hoping for a good hatch rate because I did make up my mind and I want to keep all the ones besides the few I have to give to the person who gave me the eggs. I also call my cat my cat because I never use her name ever. Her name is Co named after he father Bo. I just call her cat or kitty.
I think I’ve finally named all the kittens. So that’s good lol. They are all super cute and super friendly. That’s my main rooster. He’s the one the scares me sometimes he try’s to attack me when I’m filling the waters. He also just is always following me as close as he can. So I’m not sure if he loves me or hates me. But I love him probably a lot more then I should. He’s my favorite chicken by far even if he’s sometimes scary.
The hen has successfully still kept 5 chicks alive. Even though one has gotten stuck somewhere like 3 different times and I’ve had to save it. I always get looked at by every chicken when I go to collect eggs. It’s kinda funny.
For the boy goats I have now completely finished there upgraded area. It’s about 3x bigger now. Then repurposed some things that were just laying around into a goat house.. they had one but it was a little smaller. All fencing and current animal housing has all been stuff that I’ve found around the property and reused so that’s a fun fact.
Quail are my favorite for being fast turn around. I think they’re eggs are super cute and their meat is tasty. Bart is currently obsessed with cuddling. He is always on me as soon as I lay down. He used to be only interested in cuddling with Zelma. It’s a nice change.
Cats are probably my favorite animal. They always keep me entertained. The first picture of the cats is bart and one of the kittens. I still haven’t named them…. Then the next one is of my cat I’ve had the longest. She is 4 years old and I caught this picture mid yawn. Her favorite place is on top of the incubator.
I’ve mainly only gotten beans from my garden so far. They are delicious though. My chickens are definitely my favorite thing to watch. They are all always doing something.
5 chicks as of this morning! Last night was cute, Zelma my pregnant cat cuddled in with Rue. I’m counting the days down for those kittens to be born too. Should definitely be coming up pretty soon.
I think tuck is the cutest! He slept like that when I did chores outside. He’s getting so big now!! The hen has now 4 chicks! These two are the only ones I’ve seen go out from underneath her. There’s two eggs left, so I’m excited to see if those hatch too!
The set of 8 quail that was the first group I hatched started laying! Got two eggs first day!!! I’m excited to see how many start laying from that group. My broodie hen had her first chick hatch! It’s super cute to watch her with a little one. So far there aren’t any other signs of more hatching, so I’ll have to see if she ends up with more then one.
My favorite part of my morning is feeding my boy goats. They need an expansion of there pen, just the past few days they have really demolished every last bit of green in there pen. I was hoping it would have been good enough for them with hay until November when I’m combining the boy and girl goats but it doesn’t look like that’ll work. It’ll be hopefully this weekends project to expand the boys area. Last night I let the dogs out, when I called them back I smelt something…. My oldest boy got sprayed by a skunk. I’d call that an excellent Friday treat ;) He really does stink though, so that is my project for right now.
